Silk fibers produced by Bombyx mori are made of two proteins, fibroin (about 75%) and sericin (about 25%) that, thanks to their specific properties, are today considered as extremely interesting biomaterials for biomedical and cosmetic applications. In particular, scientific studies on fibroin have demonstrated tissue regeneration properties, excellent biocompatibility, good mechanical properties and capability to support cell growth and proliferation. Moreover, the excellent capability of sericin in maintaining the skin hydrated have been demonstrated, along with excellent biocompatibility, antioxidant, anti-aging and anti-UV properties.

Alone or in combination, fibroin and sericin can be adopted as active ingredient for cosmetic formulations and applications in the pharmaceutical field.
